A higher mesh count packs more wires into the same inch, which leaves smaller gaps and finer filtration, while a lower mesh count leaves larger gaps for higher flow and coarser filtration. The exact micron rating for a given mesh count also depends on the wire diameter and the weave pattern used, whether plain, twill, or dutch weave, which is why two elements with the same nominal mesh count can sometimes filter to slightly different micron levels.
